Putting up Christmas lights is not for the faint of heart.
Between frigid temps, swaying ladders, and electrical glitches, even the professionals are challenged when it comes to putting up holiday lights.
You may be an intrepid DIY light installer, but that doesn’t mean you know every trick in the book.
Here are 3 tips that could mean the difference between wow! and meh.
Holiday Light Tip #1: Less is More
We’re not talking less lights here (heck no!). We mean use the lights you have in fewer trees.
If you’ve only got 8 strands of lights, don’t string 2 strands in 4 different trees. Those will just end up being some sad, Charlie Brown trees.
Instead, put all 8 of those strands into one tree for greater impact. Even if it’s small, you can wrap the branches for extra oomph.
Holiday Light Tip #2: Tape your Connections
Wherever you have strings of lights connecting together, you have the potential for moisture to seep in and cause an electrical short.
Be sure to wrap every connection with electrical tape to keep out moisture, and keep your lights shining brightly.
Bonus Tip: Don’t connect too many strands together. Read your labels, but 3-5 strands (depending on size) will be the max.
Holiday Light Tip #3: Backyard Love
As in holiday light love.
Many of us see our backyards a lot more than the front. There’s no reason not to light up a tree or two, drape some shrubs in net lighting, or wrap a few deck posts with mini lights.
Why should the front yard get all the excitement? Go ahead, get crazy. Light up a tree that no one but you will see.
